Prepare for your big move
Moving house can be an exciting time. But there is so much to do and it can become pretty stressful. So how do you prepare for your big move? Read on to pick up some handy hints.
Create a checklist
As we mentioned, moving can be quite overwhelming – and every single thing you need to do is essential. In order to make sure you don’t miss anything, download a moving house checklist, or create your own. This can help you to stay on track and on task, ensuring that you don’t miss anything out.
Know your budget
Moving from one house to another is expensive straight out the gate – whether you are buying or renting, you will find your finances take a hit. So when it comes to all the other parts of the move, you may have to be careful with your finances. Shop around for the most affordable movers, and if possible eliminate or reduce the amount of time you might be “between houses”. You might be surprised how much looking for the best deal can save you.
Give yourself enough time
With so much on your plate, one of the most important preparation steps is ensuring that you have enough time. Don’t try and cram everything into two weeks, or agree to move within a timeframe that is unrealistic for you. When you have enough time, things are far less likely to go wrong.
Reduce your items
If you have been living in a house for a long time, clutter can add up. Before moving, you can take this as an opportunity to reduce the number of things you own. Time to donate old clothes you no longer wear, toys that aren’t played with anymore, and books you’ve finished reading. This will save you on packing, unpacking, and give you more space in your new home.
Pack up carefully
It is vitally important to get the correct packaging for all of your items. It might be tempting to try and shove everything into black bags (as this might be the cheapest option), packaging properly will keep your possessions secure during the move. You should also make a plan to package your possessions by room so that it is easier when it comes time to unpack.
Store your stuff
Are you going to have some time between houses? If you have to leave your old property before your new house is ready, then you might find yourself staying with friends and family, or in a hotel. Plan ahead and think about putting your possessions into a storage facility. They will be secure and your items will be waiting for you when you can move into your new home.
